Buena Vista Social Club is one of the most celebrated and internationally successful albums of Cuban music ever released. Originally issued in 1997, the record brought together an extraordinary group of veteran Cuban musicians for a series of sessions in Havana, introducing their music to millions of listeners around the world.

The sessions were produced by American guitarist Ry Cooder and recorded at the historic EGREM Studios in Havana. The remarkable cast includes Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo, Eliades Ochoa and bassist Orlando “Cachaíto” López.

The album opens with the unforgettable Chan Chan, written by Compay Segundo. Its relaxed guitars, distinctive vocals and hypnotic rhythm have made it the signature song of Buena Vista Social Club.

The energetic El Cuarto de Tula and Candela contrast beautifully with the romantic atmosphere of songs such as Dos Gardenias and Veinte Años, the latter featuring the unmistakable voice of Omara Portuondo.

Musically, the album explores traditional Cuban styles including son cubano, bolero, danzón and guajira. Piano, double bass, guitar, tres, trumpet and percussion combine to create the warm and wonderfully organic sound that has helped the recordings remain timeless.

The album's extraordinary success was followed by director Wim Wenders' acclaimed Buena Vista Social Club documentary, which brought the musicians and their stories to an even wider international audience.

A winner of the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album, Buena Vista Social Club has become a genuine modern classic and an essential record for anyone interested in Cuban, Latin and world music.
