By the late summer of 1971, Elvis was already in his fifth Las Vegas season. His appearances continued to sell out as soon as they were announced, and a night with Elvis in Vegas had become much more than simply a concert – it was an event.
At the same time, 1971 remains one of the more mysterious chapters of Elvis' Las Vegas years. Unlike some of his earlier engagements, relatively little was captured on film, leaving collectors with recordings, memories and fragments of performances from this fascinating period.
Blackjack Beat offers a rare opportunity to revisit one particular night in remarkable detail. Included are two complete performances from September 1, 1971: the Dinner Show and the Midnight Show. According to the release, both concerts were recorded by a fan in the audience and had never previously circulated or been released.
These performances capture Elvis during an intriguing transitional period. After a demanding schedule, some moments reveal a more careful and restrained performer, while others suddenly explode with the energy and charisma for which his Vegas appearances became legendary. Performances such as “Suspicious Minds” remind the listener just how powerfully Elvis could still command a room.
