Las Vegas – February 3, 1974 Midnight Show
Elvis Presley – Las Vegas’ Voice Volume Two is a fascinating live release for serious Elvis collectors. Issued by the Rock Legends label in 2015 under catalogue number RL-CD05-2015, this CD features the complete February 3, 1974 Midnight Show in Las Vegas.
One of the most attractive aspects of this release is its recording source. Rather than being taken from a standard audience tape, the concert originates from a previously unreleased original booth recording, resulting in sound quality that is considerably above the average audience recording from this period.
Elvis Back in Las Vegas in 1974
Elvis returned to Las Vegas in early 1974 for his tenth concert season. By this time his Vegas engagements had changed, with this particular season lasting approximately two weeks rather than the longer engagements of earlier years.
The February 3 Midnight Show presents a varied selection of Elvis classics, contemporary material, gospel and several songs that make this period particularly interesting to collectors.
Following the familiar opening of Also Sprach Zarathustra and C.C. Rider, Elvis moves into I Got A Woman / Amen and Love Me. One of the early highlights is a powerful performance of Trying To Get To You, bringing one of his classic 1950s recordings into the very different sound of his 1970s stage shows.
The concert continues with Sweet Caroline, Love Me Tender, Johnny B. Goode, Hound Dog and Fever.
A Varied 1974 Setlist
Polk Salad Annie brings plenty of energy to the middle section of the concert, while the appearance of Killing Me Softly, followed by Spanish Eyes and Why Me Lord?, gives the show an interesting degree of variety.
Spanish Eyes is especially appealing for collectors interested in the less predictable elements of Elvis' live repertoire from this period.
Elvis then performs Suspicious Minds, followed by the band introductions. The second half continues with I Can't Stop Loving You and Help Me, before reaching the dramatic An American Trilogy.
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
The closing section also contains some noteworthy material. Let Me Be There, complete with reprise, is followed by The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
This slower and more intimate song provides an interesting contrast with the rock and larger-scale concert material heard elsewhere in the show.
The performance concludes in traditional Elvis fashion with Can't Help Falling In Love and the Closing Vamp.
Original Booth Recording
A major reason to add Las Vegas’ Voice Volume Two to an Elvis live collection is its source. According to the information supplied with the original release, the concert comes from a previously unreleased original booth recording.
As a result, the recording is described as being well above the quality normally associated with standard audience tapes and as one of the better-sounding recordings available from this particular Las Vegas engagement.
For collectors exploring Elvis' Las Vegas years in detail, this makes Las Vegas’ Voice Volume Two an especially interesting concert document.
