Elvis Presley – Long Tall Sally | CD
Las Vegas – January 27, 1973 Dinner Show
Elvis Presley – Long Tall Sally is a fascinating live CD released by the Ampex label, featuring Elvis' complete January 27, 1973 Dinner Show in Las Vegas. Issued in 2017, this release presented the concert on CD for the first time and captures Elvis at a particularly interesting moment in his career, shortly after the historic Aloha from Hawaii concert.
Sourced from an audience recording, the sound is described as Very Good for an audience recording. With 21 tracks and an excellent selection of rock 'n' roll, ballads and dramatic concert favourites, Long Tall Sally is an attractive release for collectors of Elvis' 1970s live performances.
Elvis Back in Las Vegas After Aloha
Only a short time after the January 14, 1973 Aloha from Hawaii concert, Elvis was back on stage in Las Vegas. This January 27 Dinner Show therefore provides an interesting snapshot of Elvis as he entered another Las Vegas engagement.
One of the most unusual features comes right at the beginning of the concert. After See See Rider, Elvis launches directly into the energetic Long Tall Sally / Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On medley – the performance that gives this release its title.
The pace then changes with Until It's Time For You To Go and You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, before Elvis performs Steamroller Blues, one of the important newer additions to his live repertoire at the time.
Rock 'n' Roll, Ballads and Showstoppers
The concert offers plenty of variety. You Gave Me A Mountain is followed by Fever, Love Me, Blue Suede Shoes and Love Me Tender.
Elvis then returns to his rock 'n' roll roots with Johnny B. Goode and Hound Dog, before delivering the dramatic What Now My Love.
Naturally, Suspicious Minds also makes an appearance. By 1973 it had become an established part of Elvis' concert repertoire and remained one of the major audience favourites in his live shows.
Following the band introductions, the set continues with I'll Remember You, I Can't Stop Loving You and the spectacular An American Trilogy.
Burning Love
Another highlight is Burning Love. One of Elvis' biggest hits of the early 1970s, the song brought contemporary rock energy to his concert repertoire. Here it appears near the end of the show, immediately before the traditional finale of Can't Help Falling In Love and the Closing Vamp.
The result is a varied Las Vegas performance combining classic Elvis material with songs closely associated with his early-1970s concert period.
An Interesting Raised On Rock Connection
For collectors, there is another interesting detail connected to this particular performance. According to the information supplied with the release, the photograph later used for the original RCA Raised On Rock album was taken during this show.
That gives the January 27, 1973 concert an additional connection to Elvis' official 1973 record releases.
