Golden Earring in the USA

By Gerard Wessel & Bor Beekman – coming December 2025 at Bennies Fifties!

When Golden Earring released their global breakthrough hit Radar Love in 1973, the band instantly captured America’s attention. They toured with Santana, scored multiple entries in the Billboard Hot 100, and even reached the No. 1 spot in the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks with Twilight Zone.
In total, six singles and eight albums by the band entered the influential Billboard charts — a remarkable achievement for a rock band from The Hague.

Between 1969 and 1984, Golden Earring embarked on more than ten extensive tours across the United States. Yet despite their success, the visual documentation of those American years is surprisingly scarce.

Until now.

A photographic tribute to the golden American years

In Golden Earring in the USA, photographer Gerard Wessel brings those legendary moments back to life.
His atmospheric, never-before-published photographs capture the band’s raw energy, humor, brotherhood, and unwavering belief in the rock-’n-roll dream.

In 2002, the band returned to the United States one last time — not for a tour, but for the recording of Millbrook USA in producer Paul Orofino’s studio.
Wessel was there, documenting the intimate sessions from up close. These remarkable images form the beating heart of this book.

Together with writer Bor Beekman, he creates a vivid portrait of Golden Earring’s American journey — a visual ode to the band that became a true Dutch rock institution.

About the authors

Gerard Wessel (1960) previously published books on the Hague underworld and on Herman Brood. His photography, known for portraying the colorful edges of society, has been exhibited at the Rijksmuseum.
A close friend of the band, Wessel captures Golden Earring in their most natural and honest moments.

Bor Beekman provides fresh interviews and background stories, enriching the photos with context, insight, and passion for the band’s legacy.
