Product information

John Coltrane – Impressions (Turquoise Vinyl, 180 Gram Vinyl – Limited Edition)

Available at Bennies Fifties and the online Fifties Store

Originally released in 1963, Impressions stands as one of the most important albums in John Coltrane’s catalog. It captures a pivotal moment in his artistic evolution, blending modal jazz with influences from Indian music, blues, and even Scandinavian folk traditions.

The album combines live and studio recordings made over an eighteen-month period. The live tracks were recorded in November 1961 at New York’s legendary Village Vanguard, during the same sessions that produced Live at the Village Vanguard. Coltrane is joined by his classic quartet—McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums—along with Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet and Reggie Workman on bass.

The nearly fifteen-minute studio-recorded title track “Impressions” is a tour de force, highlighting Coltrane’s intense and expressive soloing. Dolphy’s bass clarinet on “India” and the droning bass textures add a deep, spiritual atmosphere. DownBeat awarded the album five stars, describing parts of it as “more than excellent.” The album even influenced rock music, inspiring The Byrds’ classic “Eight Miles High.”

This limited edition turquoise vinyl pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl offers exceptional sound quality and is an essential addition to any serious jazz collection.
