Katonah Avenue – Original New York Enamel Street Sign
An authentic piece of New York City street history

A rare and original double-sided enamel street sign from Katonah Avenue, originating from The Bronx, New York City. This iconic street sign once marked the intersection of Katonah Avenue and East 235th Street and represents a wonderful example of early 20th-century New York street signage.

This sign is known as a "Humpback" street sign, named after its distinctive curved top section. The raised upper portion displayed the cross street, while the large lettering on the main panel identified the avenue running parallel to traffic. This innovative design was introduced in the early 1910s and remained a familiar sight throughout New York City until the mid-1950s.

Originally mounted on lampposts across the city, these signs have become highly sought-after collectibles among enthusiasts of Americana, New York memorabilia, transportation history, and industrial décor.

This authentic example was discovered and purchased in the USA by the Dutch Pickers and is now available at Bennies Fifties.

Historical Background

Katonah Avenue is one of the best-known streets in the Woodlawn neighborhood of The Bronx. For decades, these distinctive humpback signs helped define the visual identity of New York City streets. Most were removed and replaced during modernization programs in the 1950s, making surviving originals increasingly scarce today.

A true Americana statement piece

Perfect for a collector's room, garage, man cave, restaurant, loft, or vintage interior. This original New York street sign instantly adds character and authentic American history to any space.
