Islands – Elemental Mixes presents a remarkable new interpretation of Islands, the classic 1971 album by legendary British progressive rock band King Crimson. Originally released as the group's fourth studio album, Islands remains one of the most atmospheric and adventurous recordings from their early years.
For this special 2026 edition, King Crimson producer David Singleton has created an entirely new Elemental Mix, drawing upon the original multitrack recordings, studio sessions and alternative performances.
Rather than simply remastering the familiar album, Singleton approaches the music from a fresh creative perspective, revealing previously overlooked details, different instrumental textures and new relationships between the original performances.
This edition is presented on 200-gram Super-Heavyweight Black Vinyl, manufactured at The Vinyl Factory in London. The vinyl was cut by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering, providing a carefully prepared presentation of these distinctive new mixes.
The original Islands album featured a memorable King Crimson line-up, including Robert Fripp on guitar and mellotron, Mel Collins on saxophone and flute, Boz Burrell on bass guitar and lead vocals, and Ian Wallace on drums and percussion. Lyricist Peter Sinfield also played an essential role in shaping the album's artistic identity.
Musically, Islands occupies a unique place in King Crimson's catalogue. The album blends progressive rock, jazz improvisation, experimental arrangements and classical influences, creating an atmosphere that is both intimate and unpredictable.
Opening track Formentera Lady gradually unfolds into a hypnotic musical landscape, while Sailor's Tale delivers an adventurous instrumental performance driven by expressive guitar, saxophone and dynamic rhythms.
The Letters explores the band's dramatic and introspective side, contrasting with the blues-influenced energy of Ladies Of The Road.
The title track Islands remains one of King Crimson's most beautiful and atmospheric compositions, combining delicate vocals, subtle instrumentation and a deeply reflective mood.
Prelude: Song Of The Gulls introduces a chamber-music-inspired dimension, highlighting the band's willingness to move beyond conventional rock arrangements.
David Singleton's Elemental Mixes are designed to reveal new possibilities within the original recordings. For longtime King Crimson fans, this LP offers a fascinating companion to the original album, while newcomers can discover a distinctive chapter in the evolution of progressive rock.
With its innovative mixes and substantial heavyweight vinyl presentation, Islands – Elemental Mixes is an outstanding addition to any collection of progressive rock, experimental music and classic British albums.
