The offshore radio years of Radio Veronica (1959-1974)
In October 1959, a number of independent radio entrepreneurs in Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam decided to start radio broadcasts from a ship on the North Sea. Initially, they operated under the name Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland (abbreviated VRON). But the name soon changed to Radio Veronica. This book describes the magical years at sea.
The station quickly became immensely popular and broadcasted pop music in a fixed program schedule from 1969 onwards. Veronica introduced jingles, drive-in shows, the weekly Top 40 and an Alarmschijf. DJs such as Tineke de Nooij, Joost den Draaijer, Lex Harding and Rob Out became heroes.
Despite various setbacks, with the low points being a bomb attack on the transmitter ship of competitor Radio Northsea International and the stranding of its own transmitter ship after a storm with hurricane force, Veronica remained proudly standing. But an impressive mass demonstration in The Hague and the widespread popularity of the station did not stop politicians from announcing in 1974 that a legal ban on offshore radio stations was imminent. On Saturday 31 August 1974 at six o'clock in the evening, '14 years of hits from the sea' came to an end.
