Faces is one of the most remarkable, personal and critically celebrated projects by American rapper, producer and songwriter Mac Miller. Originally released as a free mixtape on May 11, 2014, the project gradually became a cult classic of alternative and underground hip-hop.
In 2021, Faces received its first official release on streaming platforms and physical formats, including this beautiful 3LP edition pressed on Yellow Opaque Vinyl. Featuring 25 tracks, the album offers an extensive journey through Mac Miller's unique musical imagination.
Faces occupies a special place in his discography. While Mac Miller initially became known for his energetic and accessible hip-hop, this project reveals a much darker, more introspective and experimental side of his artistry.
Musically, the album blends alternative hip-hop, jazz rap, psychedelic influences, soul, funk and experimental production. The sound is layered and atmospheric, combining unusual samples, distorted textures and inventive rhythmic arrangements.
Much of the production was handled by Mac Miller himself under his producer alias Larry Fisherman. His creative approach to beatmaking is central to the album's distinctive identity, moving effortlessly between jazz-inspired grooves, psychedelic soundscapes and underground hip-hop.
Lyrically, Faces explores fame, loneliness, relationships, addiction, personal struggles and self-reflection. Mac Miller balances deeply emotional themes with dark humour, surreal imagery and sharp wordplay.
Opening track Inside Outside provides a brief but powerful introduction to the album's unusual atmosphere. Here We Go follows with a confident display of Mac Miller's lyrical technique and distinctive delivery.
Friends features ScHoolboy Q and remains one of the project's best-known songs. Its dark, hypnotic production provides the perfect backdrop for the personal and sometimes unsettling lyrics.
Angel Dust and Malibu further explore the album's experimental character, combining unconventional samples with distorted sounds and a loose, psychedelic atmosphere.
On What Do You Do, Mac Miller collaborates with Sir Michael Rocks, while Polo Jeans features Earl Sweatshirt. These guest appearances reinforce the project's strong connection to underground hip-hop.
One of the album's most striking sequences consists of Happy Birthday, Wedding and Funeral. These three consecutive tracks form a thematic journey through life, relationships and mortality.
Diablo is one of the most celebrated songs on Faces. Its jazz-inspired production, memorable piano motif and Mac Miller's relaxed yet technically impressive delivery have made it a fan favourite.
Colors And Shapes is another standout performance. With its dreamlike, psychedelic atmosphere and philosophical lyrics, the track demonstrates the extraordinary range of Mac Miller's creativity.
The third LP includes several notable collaborations. Insomniak features Rick Ross, Uber includes Mike Jones, and Rain features Vince Staples.
New Faces v2 brings together Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt and Da$H for one of the most respected underground hip-hop performances on the project.
The original mixtape concludes with Grand Finale, an intense and deeply personal track that has become an important part of Mac Miller's musical legacy.
The official 2021 edition also includes the bonus track Yeah, bringing the total to 25 songs.
Faces captures Mac Miller at a crucial stage in his artistic development. The project bridges the gap between his earlier hip-hop releases and the more introspective, jazz-influenced direction later explored on albums such as The Divine Feminine, Swimming and Circles.
This special Yellow Opaque Vinyl 3LP is an essential addition to collections of Mac Miller, alternative hip-hop, jazz rap, underground rap and experimental music.
