NASHVILLE, TN (June 26, 2024) - Midland's new album, Barely Blue, delves into themes of loneliness, masculinity, and resilience with a fresh take on classic country. Recorded with nine-time GRAMMY winner Dave Cobb at Georgia Mae Studios in Savannah, GA, the eight tracks on this album embody the spirit of reflection and renewal. The opening track, "Lucky Sometimes," sets the stage with its sparse arrangement and high-lonesome groove, underscoring the album's exploration of both joy and heartache. Wystrach describes it as an anthem that introduces the new sonic landscape they crafted with Cobb, marked by soaring harmonies and a deep connection to traditional country roots. Throughout Barely Blue, Midland's signature harmonies evoke the lushness of The Mamas & the Papas, the muscular edge of Buffalo Springfield, and the cosmic American sounds of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds. The album captures a blend of introspective lyrics and dynamic guitar work, reflecting the emotional depth and nuanced storytelling characteristic of the trio's evolution. Duddy highlights the album's homage to classic country while embracing a modern perspective, with rich harmonies and compelling guitar arrangements that convey both nostalgia and innovation. Barely Blue is not only a testament to Midland's growth but also an engaging exploration of how music can articulate the complex emotions tied to love, loss, and personal resilience.
