Tonight’s The Night is one of the most intense and influential albums in Neil Young’s catalogue. Recorded largely in 1973 but not released until June 20, 1975, the album is renowned for its raw performances and emotionally direct atmosphere.
The record emerged from a particularly dark period in Young’s life and career, following the deaths of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry. Their loss hangs heavily over the album. The title track Tonight’s The Night both opens and closes the record, while Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown features Whitten on an earlier live recording.
For much of the album Young is accompanied by the musicians who became known as The Santa Monica Flyers, featuring Ben Keith, Nils Lofgren, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina. Rather than chasing studio perfection, Young preserved the loose, spontaneous character of the sessions, giving songs such as Speakin’ Out, Albuquerque, Tired Eyes and Roll Another Number (For The Road) their unmistakable atmosphere.
Today, Tonight’s The Night is widely regarded as an essential Neil Young recording and one of the defining albums of his prolific 1970s period.
