Product information
For this book, Charles Beterams has taken a deep dive into Van der Stam's archive, exploring and uncovering the photographer's breathtaking oeuvre. An unprecedented amount of newly discovered Pink Floyd transparencies and negatives — beginning with those from the band's aforementioned 1967 sessions in all its psychedelic glory — have been catalogued, scanned and retouched for the first time. Nico van der Stam also shoots Pink's photographs Floyd during their concerts in 1969 and 1970 in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. By the time the band plays the Rotterdam Ahoy' in 1971, he no longer does concert photography himself and assigns the necessary tasks to his then assistant Govert de Roos, who will later become a renowned photographer himself and kindly provided the necessary foreword to this book. Most of the photos from these three performances are available to the public for the first time. His images of Syd Barrett's 1967 The Pink Floyd are of iconic beauty. Few people in the Netherlands - and even fewer abroad - associate these photos with photographer Nico van der Stam (Rotterdam 1925 - Amsterdam 2000), who captured the band in Amsterdam in April 1967 and again two months later in London. Initially focused on documenting everyday city life and the thriving local jazz scene, Van der Stam soon turned his lens to emerging pop music, photographing celebrities such as Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, The Mothers Of Invention, The Doors, Cream, Janis Joplin , The Kinks, The Supremes and The Pink Floyd. He can regularly be found in studios where artists make recordings for radio and television. "I went to the studios, took pictures of rehearsals and recordings and then sold them to the broadcasters." The few Pink Floyd photos that have been published before - without exception in a characteristic square format and often in color - are only an extract from Van der Stam's immense catalog of more than a million negatives.
