Released in August 1963, Night Beat stands as one of Sam Cooke’s most intimate and emotionally rich recordings. Captured over three late-night sessions at RCA Victor Studios in Hollywood, the album strips everything down to its essence: Cooke’s unmatched voice, a small ensemble of gifted musicians, and an atmosphere steeped in warmth and soulful depth.
The sessions brought together an extraordinary lineup, including pianist Ray Johnson, 16-year-old prodigy Billy Preston on organ, jazz great Barney Kessel on guitar, drummers Hal Blaine and Ed Hall, rhythm guitarist René Hall, and bassists Cliff Hils and Clif White. The result is a deeply expressive album filled with subtlety, groove and heartfelt emotion.
Critics have long hailed Night Beat as one of Cooke’s finest achievements. In 2007, The Guardian included it in their “1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die,” stating:
“Cooke brought spiritual intensity to everything he recorded, but his voice was never more mesmerizing than on this hushed and gracious album.”
Now reissued on stunning turquoise marble vinyl, pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl, this edition beautifully preserves the magic of the original nighttime sessions.
