1974–1977 is a fascinating double-vinyl collection exploring the final creative years of legendary British glam rock band T. Rex, led by singer, guitarist and songwriter Marc Bolan.
Rather than presenting another collection of familiar hit singles, this release offers something particularly special: 24 archival recordings, including alternative takes, rehearsal performances, working versions and studio demos, many of which were previously unreleased.
The recordings were selected from Marc Bolan's own tapes, rediscovered towards the end of 2024. They provide a rare insight into his songwriting, experimentation and recording methods during one of the most adventurous periods of his career.
Between 1974 and 1977, Bolan continued to expand the T. Rex sound beyond its glam rock foundations. His music increasingly incorporated influences from funk, soul, rhythm & blues and harder-edged rock, while retaining the distinctive guitar playing, infectious rhythms and charismatic vocals that made him famous.
The collection includes working versions of All Alone and Calling All Destroyers, alternative performances of London Boys and We Love To Boogie, and rare studio recordings such as Funky London Childhood and 20th Century Baby.
A particular highlight is I'm Dazed, a previously lost T. Rex recording discovered among the archival tapes. The album features two contrasting takes, including a 2025 mix by Steven Wilson, offering listeners different perspectives on the same composition.
The recordings were curated by T. Rex specialist Martin Barden and mastered by Phil Kinrade at AIR Studios. The double-LP packaging also features photography by renowned music photographer Kevin Cummins.
Released on September 25, 2026, through Demon Records, 1974–1977 is an essential addition for dedicated T. Rex collectors and anyone interested in the creative process behind classic British rock.
