Freaky Styley is the second studio album by Red Hot Chili Peppers, originally released in 1985. An essential chapter in the band's early history, the record captures RHCP developing the explosive combination of funk, punk, rock and rhythmic vocals that would eventually become their trademark.

A crucial ingredient was producer George Clinton, the legendary mastermind behind Parliament and Funkadelic. His influence can be heard throughout the record, with deep funk rhythms, prominent bass lines and loose, infectious grooves perfectly complementing the young Chili Peppers' manic energy.

Freaky Styley also marked the return of guitarist Hillel Slovak. Together with Anthony Kiedis, Flea and drummer Cliff Martinez, Slovak helped establish the distinctive instrumental character of the album. His funky guitar playing works particularly well alongside Flea's energetic and highly prominent bass.

The album opens with Jungle Man and features early RHCP favourites including American Ghost Dance, Catholic School Girls Rule, Blackeyed Blonde and the title track Freaky Styley. Hollywood (Africa), their interpretation of The Meters' Africa, further demonstrates the band's deep connection with funk.

Also included is their take on Sly and the Family Stone's If You Want Me To Stay, alongside tracks such as The Brothers Cup, Battle Ship, Lovin' And Touchin' and the memorable closing number Yertle The Turtle.

Although the massive international success of albums such as Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication was still years away, Freaky Styley already contains many of the ingredients that would make Red Hot Chili Peppers one of the most distinctive rock bands of their generation.

An essential LP for fans of early Red Hot Chili Peppers, George Clinton, funk rock, funk-punk and alternative 1980s rock.
