Reckless is the second studio album by American bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, originally released on September 7, 2010, through Rounder Records. The album captures the group at a defining moment in its early career and remains a celebrated recording in contemporary bluegrass and Americana.
For fans of Chris Stapleton, Reckless holds particular significance. It was the final SteelDrivers studio album to feature Stapleton as the band's regular lead vocalist and guitarist, before he went on to become one of the most acclaimed artists in modern country music.
Formed in Nashville, The SteelDrivers developed a distinctive sound combining traditional bluegrass with blues, country, Southern soul and Americana. Their music is characterised by powerful vocal harmonies, exceptional acoustic musicianship and vivid storytelling.
The line-up on Reckless features Chris Stapleton on vocals and guitar, Tammy Rogers on fiddle and vocals, Mike Henderson on mandolin and other string instruments, Richard Bailey on banjo and Mike Fleming on upright bass and vocals.
Opening track The Reckless Side Of Me immediately demonstrates the band's energy and remarkable instrumental chemistry. Good Corn Liquor follows with a driving, blues-influenced arrangement that provides a perfect setting for Stapleton's distinctive, soulful voice.
One of the album's most memorable performances is Where Rainbows Never Die. Combining heartfelt lyrics with beautiful vocal harmonies, the song highlights the emotional depth and expressive power of the group.
The Price and Can You Run further showcase the band's ability to combine traditional bluegrass instrumentation with dramatic, contemporary storytelling.
The second side includes You Put The Hurt On Me, Midnight On The Mountain and Guitars, Whiskey, Guns And Knives, moving between energetic rhythms, darker lyrical themes and impressive instrumental performances.
Closing track Ghosts Of Mississippi is a particularly powerful composition, drawing upon the musical traditions and complex history of the American South.
Produced by Luke Wooten and The SteelDrivers, Reckless received a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, reinforcing the band's reputation as one of the most innovative acts in modern bluegrass.
Featuring all twelve original album tracks, this LP is an outstanding addition to any collection of Chris Stapleton, bluegrass, country, Americana and Southern roots music.
