Live On Red Barn Radio I & II is a remarkable live album by American country singer-songwriter Tyler Childers. Bringing together two intimate performances recorded in 2013 for the acclaimed Red Barn Radio programme in Lexington, Kentucky, this collection captures Childers during the formative years of his career.
Recorded before his international breakthrough with the critically acclaimed Purgatory in 2017, these performances reveal the distinctive voice, powerful storytelling and deep Appalachian musical roots that would later establish him as one of the leading artists in modern country and Americana.
Originally released as two separate EPs, Live On Red Barn Radio I & II brings both recordings together on one 180-gram black vinyl LP, featuring eight tracks.
The first session was recorded on May 29, 2013, followed by a second performance on November 7, 2013. The intimate atmosphere of Red Barn Radio provides an ideal setting for Childers' emotionally direct songwriting and expressive vocal performances.
Born and raised in Kentucky, Tyler Childers developed a distinctive style drawing from traditional country, bluegrass, folk and Appalachian roots music. His songs explore themes of love, loss, personal struggle and everyday life in rural America, combining vivid storytelling with memorable melodies.
The album opens with Shake The Frost, a deeply moving song that has become one of Childers' most beloved early compositions. Its heartfelt lyrics and understated arrangement immediately demonstrate his exceptional ability to connect with listeners.
Deadman's Curve and Charleston Girl highlight his talent for creating colourful characters and memorable stories, blending humour, melancholy and the unmistakable atmosphere of his Kentucky upbringing.
One of the album's defining performances is Whitehouse Road, a song later re-recorded for Purgatory. This early live version captures the raw energy and authenticity that helped make it a fan favourite.
Alongside six original songs, the album includes two covers. Rock Salt And Nails was written by folk songwriter Utah Phillips, while Coming Down comes from John R. Miller. Both songs fit naturally into Childers' traditional country and Americana repertoire.
The collection closes with Follow You To Virgie and Bottles And Bibles, two emotionally resonant performances that showcase his extraordinary storytelling abilities.
Live On Red Barn Radio I & II is an essential document of Tyler Childers' early career. Free from elaborate studio production, these recordings place the focus firmly on his voice, songs and the intimate atmosphere of the original performances.
An outstanding addition to any collection of authentic country, Americana, folk and traditional American roots music.
