Long Violent History is one of the most distinctive releases in Tyler Childers' catalogue. Originally released on September 18, 2020 through Hickman Holler Records under exclusive licence to RCA Records, the album was subsequently issued on vinyl in January 2021.

Rather than following the conventional singer-songwriter approach of albums such as Purgatory and Country Squire, Childers turns his attention to his Appalachian musical roots. Eight of the nine tracks are instrumental old-time and string-band pieces, placing traditional fiddle music at the centre of the record. The musicians involved include Childers' bandmate and fiddle instructor Jesse Wells and musician and historian Dom Flemons.

The sequence culminates in the album's sole vocal and original composition, Long Violent History. The powerful title song addresses racial inequality and violence in America, asking Childers' audience to consider these issues from another community's perspective. Its direct message creates a striking conclusion after the eight traditional instrumentals.

This regular edition is pressed on 140-gram black vinyl and contains all nine tracks on a single LP. It carries EAN 0194398208619 and was released through Hickman Holler Records / RCA.
